About Mac App Index

Mac App Index is a directory of Mac apps, picked by hand and ranked by the people who use them. A person reviews every app before it is listed, and each listing is written from the developer's own website and Mac App Store page.

Apps are sorted into 12 categories, from utilities, productivity and menu bar apps to developer tools, writing and notes, design and photo, security and privacy, and focus. Each card shows the app's icon, a one-line summary, its category and how it is priced: free, free with in-app purchases, a one-time price or a subscription. Collections pull together menu bar essentials, free apps, open-source apps and apps you pay for once.

Rankings come from upvotes by signed-in users. Hot weights recent votes, so a new app can climb quickly; Top counts every vote an app has ever had; New shows the latest additions first. Apps the editors feature appear in their own section, and the site says featuring never changes how votes are counted.

Alongside the directory, Mac App Index publishes guides, comparisons and roundups, such as clipboard managers compared, the best menu bar apps and a first-day list for a new Mac. Developers can submit an app for free review. The site is independent and not affiliated with Apple.
