Every launch directory promises visitors and a backlink. What the free plan actually gets you varies far more than the landing pages suggest. On one directory a free listing comes with a followed link the same week. On another it waits in line until 2027.

We read the pricing and submit pages of seven directories on October 5, 2026, and wrote down what each one says about four things: the free listing, when your link counts for search, what paying changes, and how long the free plan takes. We run one of the seven, website.show, so it is in the table too and answers the same questions.

Three ways launch directories handle a free listing: trade a badge for a followed link, win the day for a backlink, or link back to the directory just to be listed
Seven directories fall into three groups by what their free plan asks of you.

Two things decide it: whether search engines follow the link, and what you have to keep doing to hold on to it.

A followed link, often called dofollow, passes a little of the directory's standing to your site. A nofollow link tells search engines not to count it. Both bring visitors, and a good launch day can bring more of them than a year of links. Only the followed one helps your pages rank.

What you must keep doing matters as much. A link that depends on a badge lasts while the badge stays on your homepage. A link you won in a daily vote is yours once you win. A link you paid for stays for as long as the directory keeps your listing up.

Google's spam policy asks that links exchanged for money carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow", and it names excessive link exchanges as link spam (Google Search spam policies). Every directory that sells or trades a followed link, ours included, is betting that a reviewed listing on a relevant page reads as an editorial link. Treat a directory link as a bonus on top of your launch, and keep your SEO plan about pages people search for.

Three of the seven do, if you put their badge on your homepage: Startup Fame, TinyShelf and website.show. The others give a free backlink only to launches that win, or don't say.

  • Startup Fame publishes free listings that carry its homepage badge and reviews them within 7 days. Without the badge there is no free plan.
  • TinyShelf lists products for free with a nofollow link. Its badge, checked weekly, makes the link followed, according to the badge rules quoted in a maker's public pull request.
  • website.show lists products for free with a nofollow link, and the link is followed while our badge is on your homepage. We check daily, and three missed checks in a row turn it back to nofollow. The badge rules are public.
  • Uneed gives a free launch a do-follow backlink once it reaches an upvote score of 20. A launch that stays under 10 is taken down.
  • TinyLaunch and Open-Launch give a backlink only to the daily top three. Open-Launch also wants its badge on your site. TinyLaunch calls its prize a "high authority backlink" without saying whether it is followed.
  • Fazier asks for a link back to Fazier on your homepage or footer before it lists you at all. Its page does not say whether the free listing's own link is followed.

What does paying actually buy?

Mostly time and certainty: a launch slot without the queue, and a link that does not depend on votes or a badge.

The cheapest guaranteed link in this group costs $12. Open-Launch sells ten next-day premium slots a day at that price. On website.show, $12 once keeps your link followed without the badge. It does not buy approval or a better spot on the list, and every listing waits for the same person to review it.

Uneed's $14.99 fast-track gets you a slot in about two weeks and lowers the do-follow bar to 10 upvotes. At $29.99 you pick the date and the link is guaranteed. Fazier charges $29 to drop the link-back requirement and $49 for a guaranteed backlink. TinyLaunch's premium launch costs $39.

Startup Fame is the only one here that charges by the month. Its $19 plan publishes you at once without a badge and adds recurring placement in its daily highlights. Compare a monthly plan on what you would pay over the life of the listing, since a one-time fee and a subscription are different purchases.

How long does a free listing take?

Anywhere from a day to well into next year, depending on the directory.

Timeline of the longest wait each directory states for its free plan, from about one day at website.show to free slots booked into 2027 at Open-Launch
The longest wait each directory states for a free listing, counted from October 6, 2026.

website.show aims to review a listing within 24 hours, which is a target we work to and not a guarantee. Startup Fame publishes free listings within 7 days and Fazier within 30. Uneed assigns a free launch date at most five months out. Open-Launch says its free slots are booked into 2027. TinyLaunch and TinyShelf don't state a wait for the free plan.

Which one should you pick?

Start from what you need first.

  • If you launch this week and have no budget, list where a badge earns the link: Startup Fame, TinyShelf or website.show. Each wants its own badge, so pick the ones whose badge you are happy to show on your homepage.
  • If you want launch-day traffic, the upvote launches are built for it. Plan the day, bring your own audience, and count the backlink as a prize you might not win.
  • If you want the link without a badge, the cheapest guaranteed options cost $12: Open-Launch for a dated launch, or website.show as a one-time fee.
  • If you are tempted to submit to a hundred directories at once, don't. Startup Fame's own FAQ answers that question with "Usually no", and Google's spam policy lists low-quality directory links as an example of link spam.

We built website.show around the same questions, so the answer fits in a paragraph. You can list for free with a nofollow link. You can add our badge and keep a followed link for as long as it stays up. Or you can pay $12 once for a followed link without the badge. A nofollow listing can move to the badge later from its manage page, once our check finds the badge on your homepage. A person reviews every listing before it goes live, and paying changes neither that nor your place on the list.

We are newer than the other six, and our domain carries less authority than theirs. That is why listing asks for nothing up front: you can submit a product with no badge and no payment, and decide about the link later. The full rules are in our Terms.

FAQ

Is Product Hunt still worth launching on?

It can be, for the traffic. Launching there is free, according to its own launch guide, and a good day brings visitors and early users. The guide does not cover how product links are marked, so judge it by the visitors it brings, and list on a directory as well for a page that stays.

A few relevant followed links help a new site get discovered. They do not replace pages that answer what people search for. Google treats links meant to manipulate rankings as link spam, so a handful of reviewed listings is worth more than a hundred automatic ones.

What is the DR number on directory pricing pages?

DR is Domain Rating, a score from Ahrefs for the strength of a site's backlinks. It describes the directory, not the link you get. Whether that link helps you depends on whether it is followed and whether the page around it is relevant to your product.

Can I add a badge after my listing goes live?

On website.show, yes. A nofollow listing switches to the badge from its manage page as soon as our check finds the badge on your homepage. Other directories set their own rules, so check their help pages before you rely on it.

Should I pay for more than one directory?

Only if each one brings something the others don't: an audience that matches your product, or a link from a page that is relevant to it. Two well-chosen listings usually do more than ten similar ones.
